Many organisations have experienced a journey to the cloud that is very similar, regardless of the industry they’re in. Around a decade ago, organisations started to embrace the public cloud, with the “Cloud First” mindset. The big focus here was on building customer-facing apps and services, typically in a single cloud. This wave of cloud innovation drove huge advances in innovation and service velocity. However, controlling those services and the underlying infrastructure proved challenging.

Fast forward to the present, and many organisations find themselves in a state of “Cloud Chaos”, where greater cloud choice has led to a huge spike in complexity. Building new applications has become slow and cumbersome, while managing the entire business’s portfolio across different clouds has become challenging and costly. No wonder – each cloud requires their teams to use proprietary tools that are siloed and incompatible with one another.

The target destination

The ultimate goal of any organisation’s multi-cloud journey is to become “Cloud Smart”. This means taking an architected and planned approach to multi-cloud and digital transformation. With a cloud-smart approach, you have the freedom to select the right cloud for the right workload, based on the individual needs.

However, becoming cloud smart is a journey. Failing to maximise the opportunities presented by the multi-cloud is costly. In a recent Flexera study, organisations reported that nearly a third of their cloud budget, on average, is going to waste.1

VMware delivers the full breadth of capabilities organisations need to become a digital smart enterprise and win in today’s multi-cloud world. And it’s clear that these organisations need help working out their strategy for managing their workloads and applications, migrating workloads to multi-cloud destinations, and managing them on an ongoing basis to optimise performance and cost. They need to become cloud smart, and we can serve as the trusted advisors to help them be successful.

This means the right roles and responsibilities, along with the toolset to support them, are in place to support their company’s objectives. We are seeing more and more engagements shift from tactical requirements, design, and deploy to strategic engagements, roadmap session aligned to business outcomes, be it line of business or IT departments who are requesting support.

We operate our engagements against our Service Lifecycle framework, and we are seeing a shift towards planning, where we support the Partner and their End Customers throughout the lifecycle of their solutions, far beyond the point solutions of old. It’s a really interesting shift, and one that allows for continuous engagement with our Partners and End-Customers.
