Comms-care Raises Some Dough for Macmillan Cancer Support

Baking for charity is nothing new at Comms-care and something that we've always enjoyed, while raising all-important cash for some great causes. This year however, as part of our 15th birthday celebrations, we wanted to do something a little bit special to raise money for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning – Macmillan’s most popular fundraising event for people facing cancer.

As the whole country has recently been taken over (again) by baking fever, caused by a particular TV programme making its annual comeback, we decided that this year we wouldn’t just hold a Macmillan Coffee Morning, but we would also host ‘The Great Comms-care Cake Off’ – an event designed to create a bit of friendly rivalry between our resident office bakers.

In true Bake Off fashion, our contenders were given a theme, ‘Childhood Memories’, where they were tasked to create something that conjured up nostalgic sentiments from their youth. On the entry form, contenders were asked what they would be entering but they could also choose to not specify – keeping their delicious creations under wraps until the big day.

The sweet smell of freshly baked treats wafted through the office on Friday morning. The turnout was amazing; we had glorious cupcakes adorned with bright and colourful hundreds and thousands, a humongous and – not to mention – highly indulgent chocolate cake and adorable miniature Victoria sponge sandwiches…to mention just a few! What was truly fantastic was the range of bakes which clearly demonstrated all our different and unique memories of childhood treats, meaning there was something for everyone!

Whether a natural with the mixing bowl or not, it was clear that even those who had not formally entered the Cake Off still wanted to get involved, with some bringing in scrumptious goodies from the shops that we could sell on at the Macmillan Coffee Morning.

The judging was extremely difficult and in true Paul Hollywood style the panel had to be ruthless and pick only one star baker. This person had gone to tremendous effort and had not just baked one thing – but five different, splendidly presented, assorted cakes, biscuits and pastries! Maria, a member of our Sales Support Team, was up into the early hours of Friday morning creating mouth-watering treats. Not only were the judges blown away by her hard work, but the sheer uniqueness of each baked batch was something that couldn’t go unnoticed. Maria creatively captured memories of her childhood Christmases in Slovakia, where family and friends would gather to eat homemade sweet treats as part of festive traditions.

Competitions are undeniably great fun in the office but the true importance of this event was to help raise money for a fantastic cause, through the means of a charity bake sale. We raised an impressive £110, which will go towards providing support to those affected by cancer. A huge thank you goes out to all those who baked and worked so hard to make our coffee morning possible and another big thank you goes out to all our generous employees who got involved by spending their pennies at the bake sale.

This year the team at Comms-care has already supported Comic Relief and Wear It Red, bringing our grand total close to £500 as we hope to achieve our best charitable year ever in celebration of Comms-care’s 15th birthday.
